Reviews RIGHTEOUS show. Out of the 9 shows I've been to it was definitely up there. The horn section was unreal, and Jerry was TEARING it up all night on the sax. SOJA was on point as well, those guess had a real nice groove going. I didn't see too much of VACo. I'm blown they didn't play About Mr. Brown, but I think Delicate Few may have made up for it in the encore haha. I loved how into I Feel Home the crowd was. Mixed feelings about this show. Don't get me wrong, it was certainly a quality performance and the crowd was really really into it, which is always good, but it was not one of the better setlists I have seen OAR play. I didn't get a chance to see Virginia Coalition, so I can't comment on them. Soja, however, was absolutely terrible. As in, I wish I had stayed in the parking lot drinking terrible. A couple of crusty white dudes trying to play reggae? Epic fail.
OAR's set started off strong. The new full brass section is absolutely fantastic and I hope they stick with them for the near future - they added depth and richness of sound that you could definitely hear. I love This Town as an opening song, it gets the energy up and really sets a great tone for the night. Black Rock right behind that was a great choice. The energy was super high through Love and Memories, but I thought that the Lay Down -> Here's To You -> Dangerous Connection combo was only average, which is too bad, since I think Dangerous Connection is one of the better songs on King. Through that three song set, the crowd seemed like it lost the vibe and got a little listless. The same thing happened with the combo of Taking on the World Today and Program Director. I used that as my restroom break. They made up for it with I Feel Home, City on Down, and Poker, but I didn't feel the energy in the crowd that I usually do with Poker. Love and Memories and Shattered seemed to get a bigger pop, which might reflect a changing demographic of the fan base. The encore? Meh. Personally, I would have switched the four encore songs with the last four in the main set. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Heaven - I think its one of the best songs OAR has put out in a long time - but the rest of that encore just didn't have me leaving on the high note I usually do after an OAR show.
General comments:
-I know that the band is trying to promote/sell their new CD, but 6 songs off the new album was a little excessive to me. 4, maybe 5, would have been much better.
-Notable omissions for me were: About Mr. Brown, Untitled, and About an Hour Ago.
-The 'bring everyone out from every other band' thing just really doesn't do it for me. -ahwahoo2006 August 15, 2011
This show was pretty sweet.. just like the hot sex that I had with Venaf's mom!!!!
I enjoyed listening to the music.. just like I enjoyed spankin' d'at phat azz until she begged me to stop!!!!!!!

Good Show not the best they've ever played here, but wicked storm into 52-50 was really good as was She Gone. Delicate Few was great it had been such a long time since they had played that at home in MD. None of the new stuff really moved me and Over and Over is awful just leave it out next year hopefully Mark got it out of his system the past couple years -MDdude August 15, 2011

You don't know reggae, and you don't know SOJA. If you knew reggae and Rasta, you would know SOJA is some of the best Rasta Reggae being played today. Go back and listen to the Peace in a Time of War album with so many classics, the EP with Nuclear Bomb, ZION Livity, and Freedom Time, then reacquaint yourself with Get Wiser's Bring Back Truth, Open My Eyes, and What Would...?. They studied at the Rastafari Embassy downtown, they know Rasta and know how to play reggae.

I will admit that Bobby Lee's shirt during their set was troubling, but he did change it before they came back out.
But I know you don't know music in general, not only because you had preferred to be drinking in the parking lot during SOJA, you actually did miss out on Virginia Coalition's set, which as great as SOJA is, may have been better act that day. VaCo fucking started that damn concert off right. They were in front of home town fans with a lot of energy to rock it out during a now rare show of theirs. But in the end,all three of those bands that played from 6:20 til 11:00 were amazing.
